(1)主语指同一人或物或通常配对的事物时，谓语动词用单数；主语指不同的人或物或分开的东西时，动词用复数。如：The iron and steel industryis of great importance.（“钢铁工业”看成一种工业）The food and textile industrydepend on agriculture for raw material.（“粮食工业和纺织工业”一般视为两种工业）其中，当两个名词表达一种食物，被看作一个整体，谓语动词要用单数，如：egg and rice（蛋炒饭），salt and water（盐开水）等。 (2）一个不可数名词被两个形容词修饰时，如果指两样东西，动词用复数；指一样东西，动词用单数。如：English and German grammarare different.（英语语法和德语语法是不同的。）Cool and fresh windis blowing from the earth.（凉爽和清新的风正从南方吹过来。） (3）两个名词重复，但指不同的东西，动词用复数。如：The situation before the war and the situation after the warare not the same.（战前的形势和战后的形势不同。） (4）用both … and连接两个名词作主语时，谓语动词用复数形式。如：Both bread and butter were sold out in that grocery.（那家杂货店出售面包和黄油。） (5）两个单数名词前有every, each, no, many a等修饰，动词用单数。如：Every boy and (every) girlhas the right to receive education.（男孩和女孩都有受教育的权利。）
